WIRING DIAGRAMS
.LOCATE 8,14
A wiring diagram is an essential source of information
.LOCATE 9,14
for anyone working on an electrical or electronic
.LOCATE 10,14
system.
.LOCATE 12,14
Although wiring diagrams can be intimidating if you
.LOCATE 13,14
are not accustomed to working with them, they are
.LOCATE 14,14
nothing more than road maps of circuits. If they seem
.LOCATE 15,14
hard to understand it could be because, like road
.LOCATE 16,14
maps:
.LOCATE 18,20
1. They don't look like the real thing. They
.LOCATE 19,23
are just drawings that show relative
.LOCATE 20,23
locations.
.LOCATE 22,20
2. They use special symbols.

└────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
Reading a wiring diagram is complicated by the fact
that, like the roads on a map, different parts of a
circuit can branch off in a variety of directions
AND
wiring diagrams can take slightly different forms:
1. Block Diagrams - Show major wires and connections
but little or no detail.
2. Graphic Diagrams - Attempt to make the diagram easy
to understand by including crude
drawings of components such as
lights and switches.
3. Standard Diagrams - Are highly detailed drawings that use
standard symbols to represent the
various components in the circuit.

└────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────┘
.LOCATE 9,16
The secret to understanding wiring diagrams is to:
.LOCATE 11,19
1. Focus your attention on just one section
.LOCATE 12,23
of the diagram at a time.
.LOCATE 14,19
2. Trace the flow of electrons through the
.LOCATE 15,23
complete loop formed by the circuit.
.LOCATE 17,19
3. Familiarize yourself with the standard
.LOCATE 18,23
symbols used in wiring diagrams.
.LOCATE 25,19

.LOCATE 10,21
AND, keep in mind that a circuit is ONE
.LOCATE 11,21
complete loop containing a component
.LOCATE 12,21
that will use power. When you look at a
.LOCATE 13,21
typical wiring diagram you are looking
.LOCATE 14,21
at many circuits. Concentrate on the one
.LOCATE 15,21
that is of interest to you. Ignore the others.

The following simple wiring diagram illustrates
.LOCATE 11,17
the use of the symbols. In a typical automotive
.LOCATE 12,17
electrical service manual, the diagram shown
.LOCATE 13,17
would normally be a small part of a much larger
.LOCATE 14,17
diagram showing much or all of the complete
.LOCATE 15,17
electrical system.
